Description
One frigid morning in 1943 Nazi-occupied Holland, a six-week-old Jewish baby was entrusted by her tearful parents to a devoted and courageous Dutchwoman.
In this book, that little girl - now Rivka Kahana - tells the true, riveting story of her rescue, with the help of Bat-Ami Melnik.
The story centers on the fortitude and strength of character of the Dutch rescuer, Jet de Jong, and on the man who in the course of time she married, the journalist and author David de Jong, who has been recognized as she was, as Righteous Among the Nations. It also describes the life of the Jewish prisoners in the Westerbork transit camp and tells of the love that developed in secret between Jet and David under the shadow of constant fear for their lives.
In addition to the gripping personal account the story opens a window to the life of Dutch Jewry during World War II, and adds another layer to the structure of Jewish history in recent times. The book sets out to perpetuate the memory of the rescuer who risked her life from day to day and moment to moment and is dedicated to all those who showed compassion, love, and daring during the darkest of days, exposing themselves to danger for the sake of others.
